Proper Watering Techniques
Water Water from nature is seldom reliable enough all season long to keep lawns green. That is why you must be prepared to water you lawn, providing the needed water in a consistent manner. After-all, the grass plant is 85% water. Without a constant re-supply, it will wither and dry.
Air Air in the form of wind and its moisture content (humidity) has a lot to do with how much water you must supply on a weekly basis. The more wind your lawn experiences, and the lower the humidity, the more water is evaporated. So, you must replace that missing water to ensure the health of your landscape.
Temperature Temperature plays the most important part in how much water your lawn needs. The hotter the temperatures, the more water you must supply on a weekly basis. The grass plant MUST have a constant supply in order to keep its delicate tissues cool as the water circulates through its system.
How to water your lawn properly.
You must measure how much water your sprinklers provide. Set out 3 to 4 straight sided containers (like empty soup cans or soda cans with the tops removed), turn on your sprinklers, and find out how long it takes to collect 1/2 inch of water. This is the amount of time you need to water your lawn 1 to 6 times each week to keep your lawn growing green and healthy.
Once you know how long it takes to provide 1/2 inch of water to your lawn, apply the following techniques:
Best time to water your lawn?
The most important thing is to water. But, the morning hours are better so that the surface can be dry for the evening hours. This is so that diseases won't have the moisture they need to thrive and spread. It it is VERY hot, a cooling sprinkling at mid-day will take a lot of stress off your lawn and help it tremendously.
How much and how often?
Use the information in the table below to give you a good starting point on how much water is probably appropriate. You must determine the best routine for your lawn - shaded conditions, very sunny areas, areas that get a lot of reflected heat from patios/driveways, etc. - will make a difference. Each lawn is different.
|Normal Conditions||Windy/Low Humidity||Watering Times per|
|70 - 75||Add 1"||Add 1.25"||1 to 2|
|75 - 80||Add 1.25"||Add 1.5"||2 to 3|
|80 - 85||Add 1.5"||Add 1.5" to 2"||3 to 4|
|85 - 90||Add 1.75" to 2"||Add 2 " to 2.25"||3 to 5|
|Over 80||Add 2 to 2.25"||Add 2 " to 3 "||4 to 6|
